Amid rising tensions over protests related to the Waqf Act, West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee has called for peace and appealed to the public to not get swayed by violence. His comments come at a time when demonstrations and sporadic unrest have broken out in several parts of the state.

Banerjee addressed the media and said, “I appeal to everyone to remain calm. Peace must prevail in our society.” His statement appeared aimed at preventing further escalation and discouraging any communal flare-ups that could follow the protests.

The Speaker was also firm in condemning those behind the unrest. “These incidents are not related to Ambedkar Jayanti in any way,” he clarified, addressing the ongoing confusion among some protestors who were seen conflating the two issues. “Those who are doing this are nothing but miscreants,” he added.

The violence reportedly began following rumors and anger surrounding the Waqf Act, with sections of the population alleging injustice. However, authorities have maintained that misinformation is a major driving force behind the agitation.

Banerjee’s statement is being seen as an effort to draw a clear line between the genuine observance of a national icon’s legacy and politically or communally motivated disruptions. “This is a solemn day to remember Babasaheb Ambedkar. It should not be tainted by violence,” he emphasized.

With political and social tensions running high, the administration has also stepped up vigilance. Local police forces have been deployed in sensitive areas, and appeals for peace are being echoed by several community leaders and civil society groups.
